UAB strengthens its position in innovation with 17 new patents in 2025

The UAB continues to consolidate its prominent role in the innovation ecosystem, according to the latest data from the European Patent Office (EPO), which place Catalonia as the leading region for patent applications in the country. The University ranks as the second institution in Catalonia for patent grants and is tenth in the Spanish ranking.

During 2025, UAB registered 17 new patents, five more than the previous year. It also formalised four transfer agreements with companies, which generated €904,000.

The patents generated at the University were primarily focused on sectors such as biomedicine, telecommunications and new materials, fields that also lead patentability trends at both national and European levels.

The UAB's position is part of a particularly dynamic Catalan ecosystem: Catalonia accounts for more than a third of all national patent applications, with 754 applications in 2025, 4.1% more than the previous year. Furthermore, it is the only community in the State to enter the European top 20 and the third most active in Southern Europe.

The top positions in the national ranking are held by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), with 55 patents; followed by the companies Autotech Engineering, with 28, and Amadeus, with 26 applications.
