The start-up, located at the Module Research B from the UAB Research Park, has introduced at the Cosmetorium de Barcelona Fair their frist bio-based product, with a 100% natural origin index that protects the skin while contributing to circular economy.
Roka Furadada develops active principles, with therapeutic and/or cosmetic uses, to protect agains skin diseases related to solar radiation. To diminish the environmental impace of their products and contribute to circular economy, the company has introduced their first cosmetic ingrediat based on lignin of the market, which is soluble in emollients.
Lignin is the second vegetable polimer more abundant in nature and is mainly obtained as a waste product of the paper industry. it is a polymer rich in phenols, which give it its antioxidant, antimicrobian, and UV radiation-absorbent proprierties. In short, lignin gives a structure and protects trees and other herb plans from external agents.
Each year, millions of tonnes of lignin are produced, 90% of all being burned. In developing ingredients based on lignin, Roka Furadada revlues the product giving it a second life and taking advantage of its proprierties. The result is a multifunctional ingredient that acts as an enchancer of the conservant activity and equilibrates the microbiota of the skin and scalp, named ROKA Cirkle® Sotabosk.
This product has been able to be developed thanks to the funding recieved from the research and innovation programme Horizon 2020 from the European union under the funding agreement Marie Skłodowska-Curie No. 801342 (Tecniospring INDUSTRY), as well as by the Agència per a la Competitivitat de l'Empresa de la Generalitat de Catalunya (ACCIÓ).
