Great success of the presentation of J-Lab, the new digital platform about Japan promoted by the UAB and Casa Asia research group, GREGAL.

The Macaya Palace was the setting for the public presentation of the J-Lab, a digital pioneer platform focused on the expert analysis of the relationship between Spain and Japan. 

The event had a great influx of public and awakened great interest amongst academics, students, and professionals, and is part of the official activities of the Catalan-Japan Year, promoted by Generalitat de Catalunya.

The J-Lab (www.j-lab.online) is an initiative of the GREGAL Research Group from the Center for East Asian Studies and Research (CERAO) and the Department of Translation and Interpretation and East Asian Studies of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), developed in collaboration with Casa Asia (Ministry of Foreign Affairs, EU and Cooperation). The project is knowledge transfer one, that offers a digital site for the information and analysis about the socio-economic, political, and cultural interactions with Japan, emphasizing in fields such as public diplomacy, language, society, culture, economy, and technology.

The platform continues the project started with the twin initiative K-Lab (www.k-lab.online), focused on South Korea, and is the result of the GREGAL research activity as a consolidated research group (GRC) by the Generalitat de Catalunya (2021 SGR 00558), with the R&D&I project PID2021-122897NB-I00 of the State Research Agency, Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (MCIN/AEI /10.13039/501100011033 / FEDER, UE, 2022-2025).

A world-class academic and institutional program

The J-Lab presentation had the participation was attended by José Pintor Aguilar, general director of Casa Asia, and the Consul General of Japan in Barcelona, Akiko Shikata, who gave the institutional welcome. Next, Blai Guarné (UAB), IP of the GREGAL Research Group, introduced the platform and its goals as a research and dissemination space on Japan relations. 

The event also included a conference by Professor Pau Pitarch (Tokyo Waseda University), focused on the reception of Japanese literature in Spain, followed by a dialogue with Jordi Serrano-Muñoz (GREGAL).

The event finished with a roundtable moderated by Amadeo Jensana, Director of Economics and Business of Casa Asia, with interventions of GREGAL researchers Just Castillo IglesiasMario Malo SanzAlba Serra-Vilella, and Alba Torrents, who debated about the opportunities that offer the relationships with Japan in the academic, cultural, and economic fields.
