A UAB video game brings accessibility to the public through climate crisis scenarios
The TransMedia Catalonia research group has participated in the creation of T.A.I.L., an educational video game developed as part of the Clear Climate project that demonstrates how social science research can generate innovative tools for awareness-raising and learning.
How can we ensure that information reaches everyone in emergency situations? This is one of the questions posed by T.A.I.L., a video game that combines climate crises and accessibility to raise awareness of the importance of making communication more inclusive, especially in high-risk contexts.
The game has been created as part of the European project Clear Climate, in which the UAB's TransMedia Catalonia research group, specialising in audiovisual and digital accessibility, participated as a partner. The project is an example of how research in the social sciences and humanities can transfer knowledge to society through innovative formats, capable of reaching diverse audiences and generating applied learning.
T.A.I.L. is a pixel-art role-playing game developed in four chapters. In each one, the player takes on the role of a different character who must help others in the face of climate crisis situations: a pandemic, a blackout caused by a snowfall, a flood and a forest fire. Through these situations, the video game introduces basic concepts of four accessibility modes: easy read, sign language, audio description and motor accessibility.
The video game is conceived as an educational resource and can be downloaded for computers running the Windows operating system.
Beyond its playful component, T.A.I.L. highlights the potential of knowledge transfer in the social sciences: it is not only about bringing research findings to market, but also about turning academic knowledge into useful tools for training, raising awareness and social transformation. In this case, the video game allows users to interactively experience how accessibility solutions can be crucial for ensuring that everyone receives clear and understandable information in critical moments.
