The 3rd edition of the Barcelona Deep Tech Summit, the leading conference for advanced technology start-ups, is just around the corner!

Barcelona is the third European city for the creation of start-ups, the fifth with the best ecosystem in the European Union and the seventh for the volume of funding for start-ups. And it is with this innovative and cutting-edge mentality that the Barcelona Deep Tech Summit will be held from 5 to 7 November.

The Barcelona Deep Tech Summit, the leading congress for high-tech start-ups, will be held for the third time on 5, 6 and 7 November as part of the Smart City Expo World Congress (SCEWC) at Fira Barcelona's Gran Via exhibition centre. Organised by Barcelona Activa and five Catalan universities (the Universitat de Barcelona, the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, the Universitat Pompeu Fabra and the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya), the event integrates the advanced technologies emerging from universities and research centres with the major challenges facing cities.

The Barcelona Deep Tech Summit will showcase the most innovative solutions around four major global challenges: energy transition and sustainability, Industry 4.0 and mobility, digital health and space. It will feature a full programme of conferences, round tables and workshops led by experts and professionals from different sectors.

Catalan engineer Cristian Canton, head of engineering and artificial intelligence at Meta, Laura Anne Edwards, data expert at NASA, Cristina Escoda, co-founder and CEO of Tachyon Ventures, and Francesco Perticarari, co-founder of Silicon Roundabout, will be among the speakers at the 3rd Barcelona Deep Tech Summit. Among the exhibitors will be Distinkt and AEInnova, spin-offs of UAB and Qilimanjaro and Roka Furadada, companies based at the UAB Research Park.

Roka Furadada and AEinnova, finalists of the Barcelona Deep Tech Awards

Roka Furadada, a company from the UAB Research Park that develops active ingredients for therapeutic and/or cosmetic use to protect against skin diseases related to solar radiation, and AEInnova, a UAB spin-off company that has developed the first sensors on the market powered by residual heat, are two of the three finalists for the prize for the best Deep Tech start-up. On Thursday 7 November at 13:20, they will present their project and the jury will decide live which company is the winner.

Barcelona, a deep tech benchmark

Barcelona is already a European benchmark for deep tech start-ups, with the highest percentage of this type of company in the city (13%), according to consultancy Deal Room.

In addition, the number of deep tech start-ups in Catalonia has increased by 10%, reaching 320 across the region, according to the latest ACCIÓ report. The same document highlights that they now employ more than 2,300 people and, according to the latest data, the volume of investment attracted by these start-ups reached 183 million euros in 2022.

In this sense, in the new edition of the Barcelona Deep Tech Summit, the investment community, as well as large companies, will play a strategic role, since deep tech start-ups require higher capital and more funding, and the event is key to connecting with large companies that want to incorporate their proposals into their business. Last year, more than 100 investors and 250 start-ups participated.
